A pergola shapes a patio rather than sealing it: you get structure, defined shade and something for a vine or a string of lights to hang from, with the sky still overhead. Our pergolas run from 8' x 8' to 10' x 20', by Sojag, Gazebo Penguin and Corriveau.

The roof is the whole decision, and there are two kinds. A louvered roof has aluminium slats you rotate from closed to open, so one structure gives full shade at noon and full sun in the evening — the Sojag Hilo and the Gazebo Penguin Vikos. A canopy roof is fabric, and costs a fraction of that, in three styles: the Corriveau San Luis canopy slides along a track and pulls back by hand; the Sojag Lima and Fontana carry a PVC-coated polyester canopy draped over the frame; and the compact Sojag Dunwich 8 x 8 takes three fabric panels that buckle on as a roof or as side screens.

Frames are aluminium, apart from the steel Dunwich 8 x 8. Aluminium is the default here for a reason: it does not rust, it stays light enough for two people to raise, and the powder-coated finishes — black, grey, teal, cream and wood-look — hold up to Canadian sun without repainting. Every pergola needs anchoring: the roof is a wind surface even when it is open.

Does a pergola keep the rain off?

Only a louvered one, and only with the slats closed. A canopy pergola handles a light shower, but a retractable canopy should be pulled back before a storm and a draped canopy comes off for winter. If you want to sit out in the rain, a gazebo with a hardtop is the right structure.

Louvered or a canopy?

Louvered if the patio is used all day and you want to change the light without getting up on a ladder — you rotate the slats by hand crank or motor. A canopy if the budget matters more than the adjustment; a canopy pergola typically costs a fraction of a louvered one, and fabric is easy to replace when it ages.

What size pergola do I need?

Measure the furniture and add about 2 ft on each side. A 8 x 8 ft pergola frames a bistro set or a barbecue; 10 x 10 ft covers a four-person table; 10 x 12 ft takes a six-seat table and 10 x 20 ft runs the length of a deck. Sizes in the range: 8' x 8', 10' x 10', 10' x 12', 10' x 13', 10' x 20'.

Do pergolas need to be anchored?

Yes, always, and on all four posts. An open pergola still catches wind, and a louvered roof with the slats closed catches a great deal of it. Post bases screw into deck joists, take sleeve anchors in concrete, or use the manufacturer's ground anchors on grass — and level the site first, because a racked frame binds the louvers.

Can a pergola stay up over winter?

An aluminium frame can, and most owners here leave it standing. Open the louvers so snow falls through instead of loading the roof, take a fabric canopy off before the first lasting snow, and clear drifts off a closed louvered roof after a heavy storm.

Can I replace the canopy later?

Yes. Replacement canopies are made per model and size — the San Luis canopies in 10x10 and 10x12 are the most requested. Match the model name from the product title and the size, since the track spacing differs between lines.
