A shed is the cheapest square footage you will ever add to a property, and the fastest: a galvanized-steel kit goes up over a weekend with hand tools, needs no permit in most municipalities at the sizes people actually buy, and takes the mower, the snowblower and the bikes out of the garage. Our sheds and storage buildings run from a 2 x 4 ft patio locker to 14 x 17 ft workshops, by Arrow, ShelterLogic, Scotts and Sojag.

Almost everything here is galvanized steel, because it does not rot, will not be eaten, holds a snow load and comes pre-cut and pre-drilled. Arrow is the bulk of the range, from the small Spacemaker patio lockers up to the 14 x 17 ft Classic buildings. The resin models are moulded plastic: no rust ever, no painting, lighter panels, but a lower snow rating and a size ceiling. Aluminium is the exception.

Two things people leave out of the budget and then need. A floor frame — steel sheds ship without a floor, so the kit bolts to a wooden platform you build on the frame, or straight onto a concrete pad. And an anchor kit: concrete anchors for a slab, earth augers for grass. An unanchored shed is a sail, and every manufacturer's warranty assumes it is anchored.

Do I need a permit for a shed?

It depends on your municipality and the floor area. Many Canadian cities exempt accessory buildings under about 100 to 110 sq ft, which covers everything up to roughly 10 x 10 ft, but setbacks from the property line and rear-yard coverage limits apply at every size. Anything 12 x 14 ft or larger usually needs a permit. Check your local bylaw before ordering.

What do I put a shed on?

A level base, always. A poured concrete pad is best and is the only base that needs no floor frame. A gravel pad with a pressure-treated wood platform is the common choice and drains well. Bare grass is not a base: the panels rack, the doors stop lining up, and the floor rots.

Does a steel shed come with a floor?

No — steel sheds ship as walls and roof, and the floor is either a concrete pad or a wooden platform built on a floor-frame kit sold for that model. Buy the frame with the shed; it is sized to the building and getting the footprint square is what makes the doors work.

Can a shed take the snow load here?

Galvanized-steel sheds are engineered for it, and the roof style matters: a peak or gambrel roof sheds snow, a low-pitch pent roof holds more. Clear the roof after a heavy wet snowfall regardless of the rating, especially on the wider buildings, and keep the doors clear so you can actually get in.

Steel or resin?

Steel for strength, snow load and size — it is what almost the whole range is. Resin if the shed sits somewhere damp or coastal, or you want zero maintenance and never intend to paint it; accept the smaller sizes and the lighter snow rating.
