4x8 Sheds

A 4 x 8 ft shed is the small shed that still takes a push mower: 8 ft wide and only 4 ft deep, so it slides along a fence, the side of the house or the end of a narrow yard where a square shed would not fit. Garden tools, a mower, a trimmer and bags of soil go in with shelving room to spare. Every shed in this size is Arrow steel: the Classic with sliding doors, the Select with taller walls, and the Elite in Galvalume steel.

Headroom is the difference: the Classic 8x4 has 5′10″ at the peak, the Select 6′4″ and the Elite 6′4″. All three have a pitched gable roof that sheds rain and snow. Is a 4x8 the same as an 8x4?

Yes, the same footprint named from a different side. Arrow names its sheds width first, so an 8x4 is 8 ft across the door wall and 4 ft deep: the Classic 8x4 measures 8′4″ wide and 3′11″ deep outside. That shallow depth is what lets it sit along a fence or wall.

How much room is inside?

The Classic and Select 8x4 are 7′11″ wide by 3′6″ deep inside; the Classic has 5′10″ at the peak and the Select 6′4″. The Elite is 7′10″ by 3′7″ with 6′4″.

Which floor do I need?

Steel sheds come without a floor. The Classic and Select 8x4 take the Arrow floor frame kit and the Elite 8x4 its own Elite floor frame; set the frame on a level gravel pad, or bolt the shed straight to a concrete slab.

Do I need a permit, and how is it anchored?

At 32 sq ft a 4 x 8 is well under the size most Canadian municipalities exempt from a permit, but setbacks from the lot line still apply, so check your bylaw. Anchor it with the concrete anchor kit on a slab or the earth anchor kit in soil — a small steel shed is light enough to move in a strong wind.
