12x14 Sheds

A 12 x 14 ft shed is 168 sq ft, the step up from a 12x12. It comes two ways round: the 12x14 has its doors on the 12 ft wall and depth behind them, the 14x12 puts the doors on the long wall, which is easier to reach into on a shallow lot. Both are Arrow steel: the Classic in galvanized steel with a 12-year warranty, and the Elite in Galvalume steel with a 15-year warranty.

Headroom: the Classic 12x14 has 7′9″ at the peak, the Classic 14x12 7′2″ and the Elite 12x14 8′4″. There is no floor frame kit for these sizes, so plan a concrete slab or a built wooden platform, and at 168 sq ft check your bylaw before ordering. 12x14 or 14x12: which one?

The same footprint with the doors on a different wall. Arrow names width first: the Classic 12x14 is 12′2″ wide at the doors and 14′6″ deep, the Classic 14x12 14′1″ wide and 12′2″ deep. Pick the 14x12 for a shallow lot or when you want to reach everything from the doors, the 12x14 for a narrow side yard.

How much room is inside?

The Classic 12x14 is 11′9″ by 14′1″ inside with 7′9″ at the peak; the Elite 12x14 is 11′10″ by 13′10″ with 8′4″.

What base does it need?

Steel sheds come without a floor, and no floor frame kit is sold for 12x14 or 14x12, so bolt the shed to a level concrete slab or build a wooden platform. Anchor it with the concrete anchor kit on a slab or the earth anchor kit through a platform into the ground.

Does a 12x14 need a permit?

Usually. At 168 sq ft it is over the accessory-building exemption in many Canadian municipalities, and a larger shed also has to respect setbacks and lot-coverage limits. Ask your building department before ordering.
