Aluminum Pergolas

An aluminum pergola does not rust, so it can stand beside a pool or on a deck for years with no more care than a wash. The pergolas here come two ways. Louvered: the Sojag HILO and the Gazebo Penguin Vikos have a roof of slats you tilt with a hand crank, from open sky to closed, with gutters that carry the rain away. Fabric roof: the Sojag Fontana and Lima stretch a PVC-coated polyester canopy over a powder-coated aluminum frame — the lighter, simpler way to add shade.

Sizes run from 10 x 10 to the 10 x 20 HILO, with 7′2″ of clearance under the beams on the Vikos and 7′ on the HILO 10x20. Every frame is powder-coated and every post base is pre-drilled for anchoring. See every pergola and our guide to louvered, shade-canopy and lattice pergolas.

Louvered or fabric roof?

A louvered roof gives you control: crank the slats open for sun and air or closed for shade and rain, and the gutters take the water away. A fabric canopy is the lighter, simpler option for shade, but it comes off for winter — Sojag says to remove the Fontana canopy completely before the cold season. For a covered space you use in all weather, choose louvers.

Are the louvers aluminum too?

On the Sojag HILO, yes: the adjustable louvers are aluminum and the roof has an integrated gutter. On the Gazebo Penguin Vikos the frame is aluminum and the louvers are galvanized steel, 0.7 mm thick, in a two-section roof so each half can be set on its own; rain runs into the gutters and drains down the posts.

How much room is under it?

The Vikos 10x10 gives 9′1″ by 9′1″ between the posts with 7′2″ of clearance, and the Vikos 10x13 9′1″ by 12′4″. The HILO 10x20 is 18′4″ by 8′11″, and the Fontana 10x12 10′11″ by 8′9″.

How is it anchored, and what about snow?

Every post base is pre-drilled so you can anchor it to the base of your choice — do anchor it, a pergola roof catches wind. Our anchoring guide covers concrete, decks, grass and gravel. We do not publish a snow-load rating for these models, so follow the manufacturer's manual for winter: take fabric canopies down, and check the manual before leaving snow on louvers.
