How do I keep my patio umbrella from blowing over in wind?

Prevent your patio umbrella from wind damage:

• Base weight: Minimum 50 lbs. for standard market umbrellas, 100+ lbs. for cantilever models. Sand-filled or water-filled bases are most practical.
• Close when unattended: Always crank the umbrella closed when you leave the area or see wind picking up
• Wind limit: Most patio umbrellas are safe to about 40 km/h. Above that, close and secure.
• Tilt down: If moderate wind comes from one direction, tilt the canopy into the wind to reduce lift
• Strap down: Use a velcro strap around the closed canopy to prevent it from catching wind gusts
