Roma Gazebos
A gazebo is the fastest way to make a patio usable all summer: shade at midday, cover in a shower, and a frame that takes mosquito netting and curtains. Our gazebos run from 5' x 8' to 10' x 20', built by Sojag, Gazebo Penguin and ShelterLogic.
The first choice is the roof. You can choose a galvanized-steel hardtop, a polycarbonate hardtop that lets daylight through, or a fabric canopy. Hardtops are rated for snow and are meant to stay up all year; a fabric canopy comes down before the first snow. The second choice is where it stands: freestanding, or bolted to the house, which suits a narrow patio or a walk-out door.

Which roof suits your yard?
| Roof | Stays up in winter | Light under it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanized steel | Yes — clear heavy snow after big storms | Shaded, with a vent at the peak | A permanent outdoor room; the most common choice in Canada |
| Polycarbonate | Yes | Bright — daylight passes through the panels | Dining areas and anywhere a steel roof would feel dark |
| Fabric (soft-top) | No — the canopy comes down in the fall | Filtered | A lower budget, or a spot you only use in summer |
Gazebo FAQ
What size gazebo do I need?
Work from the furniture, not the yard. A bistro set fits under 8 x 8 ft; a table for six needs about 10 x 12 ft; 12 x 16 ft covers a dining table and a seating area. Add roughly 2 ft on each side so the posts do not land on the edge of the deck and the roof overhang clears the house. Sizes in the range: 5' x 8', 6' x 8', 6' x 10', 7' x 9', 8' x 8', 8.5' x 8.5', 10' x 10', 10' x 12', 11' x 11', 10' x 14', 12' x 16', 10' x 20'.
Can a gazebo stay up all winter in Canada?
A hardtop can. Galvanized-steel and polycarbonate roofs are engineered for snow load: take the curtains and mosquito netting down in the fall, clear heavy snow after a big storm, and a winter cover keeps snow and leaves off the frame. A soft-top is different — its canopy must come off before the first lasting snow or the fabric will stretch and tear.
Do I need a permit for a gazebo?
It depends on your municipality and on how the gazebo is attached. A freestanding gazebo under about 100 sq ft is usually below the accessory-structure threshold, but setbacks from the property line still apply, and a wall-mounted gazebo is often treated as an addition because it bolts to the house. Check your local bylaw before ordering.
How is a gazebo anchored?
On a deck, the post bases screw through the boards into joists. On concrete, they take sleeve anchors. On grass or gravel, use the manufacturer's auger or stake kit — and never leave a gazebo unanchored, because an empty roof catches wind like a sail.
What is the difference between a gazebo and a pergola?
A gazebo has a solid roof, so it sheds rain and creates real shade. A pergola has an open or louvered top and is about filtered light and structure, not shelter. If you want to sit out in a shower, choose a gazebo.
Can I buy curtains or a replacement roof later?
Yes — accessories are made per model and size. Check the model name on your gazebo (it is in the product title) and match the size; universal winter covers are chosen by size rather than by model.
