20x20 Carports

A 20 x 20 ft carport covers two cars side by side, or one car plus a covered work or play area, on a 400 sq ft footprint. In this size they are Arrow all-steel carports, open or closed in on one, two or three sides; current prices are in the list below.

The frame is 2 in. square steel tube under a galvanized steel roof, rated for wind and snow load, with rounded eaves and a 12 in. overhang at the gables. There are two heights, 9′10″ and 11′11″ overall, and inside it measures 19′9″ by 19′9″. The enclosure kits add 29-gauge galvanized steel walls on one, two or three sides; with three, the carport becomes a building open at one end. Will two cars fit?

Yes. Inside it is 19′9″ wide and 19′9″ deep, room for two cars side by side with a walkway between them. Check the width of your two vehicles with their doors open before you choose the side walls.

Open or enclosed?

Open is the cheapest and the easiest to park under. One wall on the prevailing-wind side cuts drifting snow; three walls give you a building with an open front, the most protection short of a garage. The walls are 29-gauge galvanized steel, matching the roof.

Does a 20x20 carport need a permit?

Expect one. At 400 sq ft it is a permanent structure well above the size most municipalities exempt, and setbacks and lot-coverage limits apply. Ask your building department before you order; it will want the size, the height and how the posts are anchored.

Will it take Canadian snow?
