12x20 Garages

A 12 x 20 ft garage takes one car, SUV or pickup, or a boat or snowmobiles on their trailer, with room to walk around them. In this size you choose between two very different buildings. Portable garages from ShelterLogic stretch a waterproof polyethylene cover over a powder-coated steel frame: the Garage-in-a-Box, and the ShelterCoat in three roof styles — round, peak and barn, the barn in 9 ft or 11 ft heights — each in gray or green. Headroom is the main difference: the ShelterCoat Barn 11 ft stands 10′10″ tall with a 103 in door opening, for a van, a pickup with a cap or a boat on its trailer, while the Garage-in-a-Box stands 8′6″. What fits inside a 12 x 20 garage?

One vehicle with room to open its doors, or a trailer with a boat, an ATV or snowmobiles. Inside, the Garage-in-a-Box is 12′1″ wide by 19′11″ deep, the ShelterCoat Barn 11′8″ by 19′9″ and the Sojag Everest 11′9″ by 19′10″. Round, peak or barn roof?

A round roof sheds snow on its own and is the style ShelterLogic rates for wind and snow in this size. A peak roof gives a classic garage look. A barn roof keeps its full height further toward the walls, so it holds taller loads and shelving; the 11 ft barn has the tallest door of the range.

Portable or steel garage?

A portable garage costs less, goes up in a weekend and can come down in spring, but its cover is fabric and ShelterLogic's warranty is 1 year. The Sojag Everest is a permanent building: Galvalume steel walls and roof, a roll-up door you can motorise, and a 20-year limited warranty. It usually needs a permit and a proper base.

How do I anchor it, and what about snow?

ShelterLogic recommends one anchor per leg; the steel foot plates bolt to ground anchors, concrete or a pony wall, and the Garage-in-a-Box ships with temporary anchors only.
