Gazebo Penguin Gazebos

A gazebo is the fastest way to make a patio usable all summer: shade at midday, cover in a shower, and a frame that takes mosquito netting and curtains. Our gazebos run from 5' x 8' to 10' x 20', built by Sojag, Gazebo Penguin and ShelterLogic.

The first choice is the roof. You can choose a galvanized-steel hardtop, a polycarbonate hardtop that lets daylight through, or a fabric canopy. Hardtops are rated for snow and are meant to stay up all year; a fabric canopy comes down before the first snow. The second choice is where it stands: freestanding, or bolted to the house, which suits a narrow patio or a walk-out door.

Gazebo FAQ

What size gazebo do I need?

Work from the furniture, not the yard. A bistro set fits under 8 x 8 ft; a table for six needs about 10 x 12 ft; 12 x 16 ft covers a dining table and a seating area. Add roughly 2 ft on each side so the posts do not land on the edge of the deck and the roof overhang clears the house. Sizes in the range: 5' x 8', 6' x 8', 6' x 10', 7' x 9', 8' x 8', 8.5' x 8.5', 10' x 10', 10' x 12', 11' x 11', 10' x 14', 12' x 16', 10' x 20'.

Can a gazebo stay up all winter in Canada?

A hardtop can. Galvanized-steel and polycarbonate roofs are engineered for snow load: take the curtains and mosquito netting down in the fall, clear heavy snow after a big storm, and a winter cover keeps snow and leaves off the frame. A soft-top is different — its canopy must come off before the first lasting snow or the fabric will stretch and tear.

Do I need a permit for a gazebo?

It depends on your municipality and on how the gazebo is attached. A freestanding gazebo under about 100 sq ft is usually below the accessory-structure threshold, but setbacks from the property line still apply, and a wall-mounted gazebo is often treated as an addition because it bolts to the house. Check your local bylaw before ordering.

How is a gazebo anchored?

On a deck, the post bases screw through the boards into joists. On concrete, they take sleeve anchors. On grass or gravel, use the manufacturer's auger or stake kit — and never leave a gazebo unanchored, because an empty roof catches wind like a sail.

What is the difference between a gazebo and a pergola?

A gazebo has a solid roof, so it sheds rain and creates real shade. A pergola has an open or louvered top and is about filtered light and structure, not shelter. If you want to sit out in a shower, choose a gazebo.

Can I buy curtains or a replacement roof later?

Yes — accessories are made per model and size. Check the model name on your gazebo (it is in the product title) and match the size; universal winter covers are chosen by size rather than by model.

Gazebo Penguin FAQ

Is a Gazebo Penguin Florence solarium a four-season room?

No. The Florence is a three-season solarium: an aluminum-frame enclosure with a galvanized-steel or polycarbonate roof and screened or PVC-window walls. It keeps rain, wind and insects out from spring to fall, but it is not insulated or heated for winter.

Which sizes do Gazebo Penguin solariums come in?

Sizes listed at IPATIO: 8x12, 11x10, 10x12, 8x16, 12x12, 11x14, 10x16, 12x15, 12x18. The Florence is available wall-mounted or freestanding; the Myrdal is freestanding and listed in 11x10 and 11x14.

Should I choose a wall-mounted or a freestanding solarium?

A wall-mounted solarium bolts to the house, usually around a patio door, and uses the house wall as its fourth side; a freestanding one stands anywhere on a deck or patio. Attached structures are often treated differently by municipalities, so check your local bylaw before ordering.

Does Gazebo Penguin make gazebos and pergolas?

Yes: the Yosemite gazebo (10x10, 10x12 and 12x16), the Venus gazebo (12x14 and 12x16) and the Vikos pergola (10x10 and 10x13).
