20x20 Garages & Double Carports

A 20 x 20 ft garage holds two cars side by side on a 400 sq ft footprint. Here you build it from an Arrow all-steel carport: a 2 in. steel tube frame under a 29-gauge galvanized steel roof, 7 ft or 9 ft tall, in eggshell or charcoal. Then close it in as far as you need. Add steel walls on one, two or three sides; with three, you have a building open at the front. Or turn the 7 ft model into a fully enclosed garage with the 20x20 enclosure kit, triple-layer polyethylene walls with front and rear doors, so you can drive straight through.

For a garage-style door, the enclosure takes the Pull-Eaze roll-up door kit, sold separately. Arrow rates the carport for 100 mph winds and a 35 lb per sq ft snow load when it stands alone and is securely anchored, and the frame carries a 10-year warranty. Is a carport with walls a real garage?

With three steel walls it is a covered building open at one end: it keeps snow, rain and sun off two cars, but it does not lock. For a fully closed building, put the 20x20 enclosure kit on the 7 ft carport; it has front and rear doors, and the Pull-Eaze roll-up door kit adds a garage-style door.

Will two cars fit?

Yes. Inside it is 19′9″ wide and 19′9″ deep, room for two cars or SUVs side by side with a walkway between them. Measure both vehicles with the doors open before you choose how many walls to add.

7 ft or 9 ft tall?

The 9 ft model stands 11′11″ overall and clears vans, lifted trucks and roof boxes; the 7 ft model stands 9′10″, and it is the one the fabric enclosure kit fits.

Does a 20x20 garage need a permit?

Expect one. At 400 sq ft it is a permanent structure above the size most municipalities exempt, and setbacks and lot-coverage limits apply. Arrow's wind and snow ratings assume a securely anchored frame without an enclosure kit, so ask your building department before you order, and see snow-load ratings explained.
